The Assault on Tol-in-Gaurhoth by tuuliky The Assault on Tol-in-Gaurhoth by tuuliky
In that hour Luthien came, and standing upon the bridge that led to Sauron's isle she sang a song that no walls of stone could hinder. Beren heard, and he thought that he dreamed; for the stars shone above him, and in the trees nightingales were singing. And in answer he sang a song of challenge that he had made in praise of the Seven Stars, the Sickle of the Valar that Varda hung above the North as a sign for the fall of Morgoth. Then all strength left him and he fell down into darkness.

But Luthien heard his answering voice, and she sang then a song of greater power. The wolves howled, and the isle trembled. Sauron stood in the high tower, wrapped in his black thought ;but he smiled hearing her voice, for he knew that it was the daughter of Melian. The fame of the beauty of Luthien and the wonder of her song had long gone forth from Doriath; and he thought to make her captive and hand her over to the power of Morgoth, for his reward would be great. Therefore he sent a wolf to the bridge. But Huan slew it silently. Still Sauron sent others one by one; and one by one Huan took them by the throat and slew them. Then Sauron sent Draugluin, a dread beast, old in evil lord and sire of the werewolves of Angband. His might was great; and the battle of Huan and Draugluin was long and fierce. Yet at length Draugluin escaped, and fleeing back into the tower he died before Sauron's feet; and as he died he told his master: 'Huan is there!' Now Sauron knew well, as did all in that land, the fate that was decreed for the hound of Valinor, and it came into his thought that he himself would accomplish it. Therefore he took upon himself the form of a werewolf, and made himself the mightiest that had yet walked the world; and he came forth to win the passage of the bridge.

Your design for Sauron is one of my all time favorites! I really love how you captured the elven, yet ethereal quality that I think a Maia would possess! I also like how you depicted Luthien with short hair, which makes perfect sense after she wove her enchanted cloak. Wonderful work of art! :)

This is an awesome image. Great scene from a greaty story, and you did a wondeful job illustrating it. Personally, I never really pictured Huan with the floppier dog ears, but that is a minor detail. Every part of this picture is amazing.

Also, I really, really like how you drew Sauron here. He is in a fair form; yet, you can see the pride, arrogance, and malice in his facial expression as he looks out toward the approaching heroes. I have not seen many images that simualtaneouly show the evil intent of the character and his fair form. Excellent work.

Wow! forgive me for saying this, but Sauron in his 'fair form' before it was taken from him is stunning! :blushes: lol
I think this is one of my favourite scenes in the Silmarillion. I love how Huan just takes the other wolves down! Huan is amazing though I did imagine him as a wolf but a good wolf.

This is definitely the MOST BEAUTIFUL artwork of Sauron I've ever seen. *_*
Stunning, brilliant and drop-dead gorgeous! *bows reverently*
.... and exactly like I always pictured him, handsome beyond belief. Goodness, I'm in love. <3

Really hope there is more to come. *oh please ^^;*

Needless to say that Luthien and Huan are great, too. ^__~

I hope I didn't alienate you with my rhapsodic enthusiasm, but one hardly finds such fine artwork, even here on DeviantArt. ^^;

Are you a professional artist or is it "just" one of your leisure activities?

Best wishes and keep up your good work. ^_^b

Отзеркален. Так, на мой взгляд, динамичней.
А Саурону, полагаю, все равно - скорее всего, он обеими владеет одинаково.

This absolutely rocks. Your rendition of Luthien is AWESOME. When I saw her I said "Short hair? what?.." But It makes sense, because she made an "Invisibility cloak" with her hair, and, obviously, her hair was short after that. OK, it was a wonderful detail I haven't seen before. I enjoy that kind of tiny details ;)
Your Huan is unique too. I've always seen it like a huge fierce dog, and yours is powerful and cute, too. I love it, it's great to see different versions of characters (or dogs).
And Sauron!!!!!!! He's absolutely evil and gorgeous. But more evil than gorgeous. This is one of the best versions I've seen of him. I'm speechless
You're one of the great artists of DA!

I LOVE the handsome Sauron. The rest is beautiful as well, but the pretty Sauron (and his armour design!) is the best. There should be more pretty depictions of villains!

Brilliant work, tuuliky!

I joined DeviantArt specifically to comment on this although I have admired your other renditions as a passive lurker. :^)

The images of Luthien, Huan and Sauron all ring true. I adore Luthien's short hair - again, fitting with JRRT's writings as previously noted. She looks determined and powerful not to mention beautiful. Huan's great! A true, loyal hound of Valinor!

As for the special attention paid to the Dark Lord, I agree with Qitian. Keep in mind that Tolkien's various comments in his letters (Letters of JRR Tolkien) and essays in Myths Transformed (History of Middle-earth, vol X), and even a paragraph in Parma Eldalamberon 17 portray Sauron not as a villain of unidimensional evil, but a fairly complex character who began with good intention but fell into darkness due to his craven lust for power and control.

My avatar image is too blurry to make out, I suppose, but it is one of Gustave Doré's renditions of Lucifer - an illustration for John Milton's Paradise Lost. So I see your image of the fallen Maia to be very much in keeping with the tradition of Doré's Lucifer: the remnants of the good are still evident in the figure's beauty but the evil that eventually consumes him is present, too.

In short, fantastic work on these icons of The Silmarillion!

Because he's so strikingly different from most other depictions. Most artists seem to go with some kind of monster look. But I think "pretty" villains are much more convincing, and a LOT scarier.

The point is taken from the book. You certainly remember she had her hair in crop.
It was hard to paint this picture, all because of her short hair. Really terrible!
You meant this detail, didn't you?

I remember she cut her hair but I didn't imagine it was so short. I always thought the spell of long hair growing still act a little while she weave a coat and after she run away from Menegroth so I thought she got back her long hair soon, al least she had many troubles and she was prisoner by long time...And yes, short are really terrible :giggle:

I was reading Lost Tales 2 today, and in the original version Tolkien explains this.

It says, and this IS accurate if not word for word, after she cut her hair "nigh to her head" (and it even mentions her having difficulty doing it and being unhappy about it) her hair "grew as it did before" she used magic on it. So techically her hair should be shorter than most depictions--how long was she in the wild before they went back to recover the Simaril? Not long enough to regain her long hair, unless an Elf's hair grows faster than human hair.

Sorry *dork rant over*

Very very lovely piece. I especially love Sauron. Instant fave :D

Well, Tuuliky has made me to unravel the mistery.
She often uses a friend to translate the somewhat difficult phrases from English to Russian and vice versa.
She even slandered herself into being unable to put two foreign words together, which she is able to, of course.
